We love the idea that groundbreaking research in the field of environmental neuroscience is being conducted to determine the impact that backpacking, and the connection with nature that it provides, has on the human brain. As a matter of fact, after reading Elisabeth Kwak-Hefferan’s article in the current issue of Backpacker Magazine (May 2012) highlighting David Strayer’s (Ph.D.) research, we like to think we felt a little smarter. Not just because we knew that the appropriate word association of barrel, root and belly was beer, but because the article reinforced the years of lifestyle decisions we’ve been making that have allowed us to place our search for a disconnected solitude, remote trails, and wilderness environments as priorities in our lives. We take a great deal of pride in our opportunity to be a resource for hikers and backpackers in search of outdoor information. As a matter of fact, we invite anyone who is attempting to develop a passion for the outdoors to call upon our advice when planning and preparing for adventures, while deciding on gear decisions and potential purchases, and when simply searching for that extra ounce of motivation or inspiration that they need to confidently venture into the amazing backpacking destinations this country has to offer.
We feel we are in a unique position as Hosts of the Get Out More Tour and we want to be sure we share the discoveries we’ve made while visiting hundreds of outdoor outfitters and while spending over a thousand nights living out of our tents on trails and in campgrounds throughout the United States. The Get Out More Tour had just concluded and the students from Baylor University’s Outdoor Group, that had combined with the local mix of teenagers, young adults and retirees to create the standing room only audience, had divided themselves between the racks and shelves, the register and the Cricket Camper that was on display in the parking lot of the Austin, Texas Whole Earth Provision Co.
